A selection of Polaroids from the series Le Pain will be exhibited at Paris Photo 2025. The complete series will be available upon request during the fair. In Romance languages, bread evokes life and desire, but in English, the word pain refers to suffering. This ambivalence recalls, for artist Marianne Mari?, the climactic and scandalous scene from Marco Ferreri’s cult film La Grande Bouffe (1973), starring Marcello Mastroianni, Ugo Tognazzi, Michel Piccoli, Philippe Noiret, and Andréa Ferréol, where food becomes a symbol of desire, decadence, and transgression of limits. The film won the “International Critics’ Prize” at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival. The artist reinterprets this reference, transforming bread into both an erotic and everyday object, turning every photographed moment into a metaphor for the body in excess and freedom. Through this series, Maric continues her dialogue with art history, reinventing classical icons, Venus, Madonnas, and Virgins, within an aesthetic where the performative engagement of the model becomes a vehicle for power, humor, and transgression. The Pain is not merely an image: it is an action, a ritual, a celebration of the free and sovereign female body, paying tribute to Andréa Ferréol, the actress of that scene, to whom Maric restores strength and emancipation.
