A selection of framed Polaroids from the Pain series will be on display at Paris Photo from November 13 to 16, 2025. The complete series of 14 prints will be available on request at the booth during the fair.
In Romance languages, expressions such as “bonne pâte” (good dough) or “pain béni” (blessed bread) refer to life and desire, while in English, the word “pain” evokes pain. This ambivalence reminds artist Marianne Maric of the climactic and scandalous scene in Marco Ferreri's cult film La Grande Bouffe (1973), starring Marcello Mastroianni, Ugo Tognazzi, Michel Piccoli, Philippe Noiret, and Andréa Ferréol, where food becomes a symbol of desire, decadence, and pushing boundaries. The film won the International Critics' Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival.
The artist subverts this reference by transforming bread into an object that is both erotic and everyday, making each photographed moment a metaphor for the body in excess and freedom. With this series, Marianne Maric continues her dialogue with art history, reinventing classical icons such as Venus, Madonnas, and Virgins in an aesthetic where the model's performative engagement becomes a vehicle for power, humor, and transgression.
Bread is not just an image, it is an action, a ritual, a celebration of the free and sovereign female body. The artist thus pays tribute to Andréa Ferréol, the actress in this cult scene, to whom she restores freedom and emancipation.
