Biography
Graduated from ENSAD Nancy and NCAD Dublin, Marianne Maric (1982) lives between Mulhouse and Strasbourg. Her work has been exhibited in France and internationally, notably at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris Photo, the Athens Biennale, and MO.CO. Panacée. Her Lamp-girls series has been presented by Nick Knight?s SHOWstudio and at the Palais Galliera. As the guest of honor at the Festival Internacional de Fotografía de Valparaíso, she has also held residencies in Berlin with Atelier Mondial and in Sarajevo with the support of DRAC Grand Est. Her work has been published in artpress and The New York Times.
At the age of ten, inspired by Truffaut?s The Wild Child, she ran away from home before being found by a forest ranger. This experience cemented her resolve: to become an artist and give free rein to her fantasies. Since 2007, she has developed a transdisciplinary approach, merging art, fashion, design, photography, music, and video. Her work deconstructs the boundaries between mediums, using the female body as a sculptural architecture.
Through analog photography, developed by the renowned Diamantino Quintas, Marianne Maric explores a subversive dialogue between the body and art history. Fascinated by statues, she embraces a form of agalmatophilia, seeking to animate stone through sensuality. Her work contrasts the coldness of marble with living flesh, reclaiming public space with a liberating pleasure. Her models?contemporary women?embody both their individuality and classical figures, which they subvert, reaffirming a long-suppressed power.
Rejecting the passive roles historically assigned to women, she restores their agency, blending playfulness with transgression. Beauty, motherhood, seduction, desire?these historically codified feminine attributes are reinvented in her mischievous and subversive images, where bathing Venuses and nursing Madonnas reclaim an uninhibited sovereignty.
