Matière Première

The Intervalle Gallery is delighted to accept the invitation from the Gosserez Gallery for this collaborative exhibition bringing together artists from both spaces. Through their physical presence, the works evoke a unique aesthetic experience: one that is lived out for the duration of a visit in a public space—or continued afterward in a collector’s home.
Materiality occupies a central place in the concerns of the featured artists. On the Gosserez side, the artist-designers work with raw materials by hand, like demiurges: through the organic forms they give to their art furniture, they pay homage to Mother Nature. On the Intervalle side, the photographs on display make materiality and experimentation their essential driving forces.
Like the pioneers of photography 150 years ago, three photographers are reinventing the medium. Photosensitive sludge from a stream polluted by an Agfa film factory can be transformed into silver emulsions and give rise to organic photographs. In contrast to our era, where progress readily embraces the immaterial, these artists—each in their own way—celebrate the primacy of the tangible, inviting us to take the shortest path to sensory pleasure.
