Before The Night is Over

“Before The Night is Over” follows in the vein of “96 Months,” in which Julien Mignot keeps a personal journal: over the course of eight years (2009–2016), he selects one image and one song from his playlist. For him, seeing and hearing remain a way of life; he thus continues to collect moments as he travels.
As in “96 Months,” the artist entrusts the Fresson studio—guardian of the carbon print process invented by Théodore-Henri Fresson in 1899—with selected excerpts, piecing together an intimate puzzle. The “Charbon-Satin” emulsion, which has retained its mystery ever since, transforms each print into a reinterpretation.
Here, Julien Mignot does not control the printing process: the development is shrouded in technical secrets. He lets go, accepting that memory emerges at a distance from the decisive moment. The sharpness disappears beneath the superimposed layers of pigments, and the image shifts toward the sensibility of Pictorialism (1890–1914), anchoring this work in a long-term memory.
