Biography
Jean-Vincent Simonet (1991) divides his time between Zurich, Bourgoin-Jallieu and Paris. He has perfected a technique of pigment printing on plastic that allows him to intervene in the work while the pigments are drying. With their hallucinatory colors, liquid forms and shifting contours, his works are also paintings.
Lures (Leurres in French) challenges the principle of reality in photography, drawing on Carolyn L. Kane's work on color. In Chromatic Algorithms (2014), the American researcher tells the extraordinary story of the synthetic colors created by the first algorithms in the 60s for the needs of the advertising industry. Are these intoxicating colors we feed on iPhones, tablets, computers and bright billboards real colors? Jean-Vincent Simonet uses synthetic colors for what they are: bait. He embraces the advertising aesthetic of pop culture to awaken our consciousness. While in everyday life the colors of these bait images are digital and reproducible, those of Jean-Vincent Simonet are analog and unique. By simultaneously printing and altering photographs on plastic film, he generates visual inconsistencies (glitching, erosion, erasure or dilution). The artist applies his fingerprints, adds brushstrokes, rubs the surface of the paper - in short, he pirates photographic subjects, themselves intended to lure us. Fishing flies, meant to magnify nature and trap fish (Fishing_fly), become inofensive still lifes. The tangle of neon pops, lanterns and lanterns (Spider_tactics) on Japanese shopping streets become luminous spider webs inviting us to daydream.
Jean-Vincent Simonet (1991), a graduate of ECAL (Lausanne), divides his time between Zurich, Paris and Bourgoin-Jailleu. He has exhibited in renowned institutions and galleries such as the Centre de la photographie Genève, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Cabaret Voltaire Zürich, Villa Noailles Hyères, FOAM Amsterdam, Webber Represent London, Fondazione Vico Magistretti Milan, Musée des Beaux-Arts Le Locle, and others. His work can be found in private and public collections such as the Vontobel Art Collection, FOAM Amsterdam, LUMA and the Swiss Post Office.
