Les Morsures de l’Eau highlights the threat of rising waters to Venice, whose fragile balance is compromised by climate change. Unlike Titian's Venus Anadyomene, a symbol of resurrection and beauty, the city of the Doges seems doomed to sink inexorably, offering powerless humans the sublime spectacle of its own decline. Julien Mauve uses a unique technique: he photographs through a portable aquarium filled with water taken from the site. His images reveal a deserted Venice, with closed doors and windows and dormant shops. The water, elevated to “Holy Water,” seems to purify this city transformed into a tourist showcase. The characteristic blurring of his photographs creates a dreamlike landscape where the city's past splendor and memory emerge, embodied by the golden mosaics of Saint Mark's and the gaze of Christ in San Michele. One question remains: how will Venice disappear?
