Les Morsures de l'Eau illustrates the growing threat of rising waters to Venice and its lagoon, a fragile balance at risk from climate change. Unlike Titian's Venus Anadyomene, which celebrates beauty and resurrection, Venice is destined to sink under this threat, with no hope of return. The men, powerless, witness the sublime vision of this inevitable decadence.
Julien Mauve uses an innovative protocol, photographing through a portable aquarium filled with tinted water. His images, antidotes to the decline evoked by Gerolamo Rovetta and Thomas Mann, show a Venice abandoned by its inhabitants: doors and windows closed, shops asleep. Water, considered ‘Holy Water’, purifies the showcase city that is Venice. The artistic blurring of the photographs creates a dreamlike landscape, reflecting the city's past grandeur and imperishable memory, visible in the golden mosaics of St Mark's Basilica and the gaze of Christ in the church of San Michele. How will Venice die?
