Votive Figure's works focus on the repetitive gesture of covering the body in wax, drawing on the tradition of religious ex-voto, where symbolic offerings are made to obtain favours or express thanks. These votive figures are often reproductions of diseased organs. In her works, the artist remains inside the wax shell, becoming a votive figure in her own right. The colour of the wax, influenced by beauty products, reveals the contact between the living body and the shell.
The artist criticises the cult of the real body, which is propagated via social media, turning beauty into a commodity. She uses an aesthetic derived from the modern cosmetics industry, with works showing the body covered in wax, evoking softness and roundness, but with an unpleasant process. In her recent work, she places this wax figure in perfect environments, like retro-futuristic interiors. Despite their aspirational appearance, these settings reveal deep alienation and loneliness, marked by cracks and scars.
