Biographie
Antony Cairns (né en 1981) vit et travaille à Londres. Ses œuvres ont notamment été présentées aux Rencontres d’Arles en 2013, au George Eastman House de New York (2016), à la Tate Modern (2018) et au Festival Images Vevey (2018). Cairns a publié une sélection de livres d’artistes dont LDN (2010), LPT (2012), OCS (2016) ainsi que CTY (2017) avec la maison d’édition Morel Books.
L’artiste conduit une réflexion sur les paysages urbains via l’utilisation de techniques et technologies dites obsolètes (caméra PXL2000, cartes perforées informatiques, codes COBOL…). Ce recours à des procédés et supports datés de plusieurs dizaines d’années – soit l’équivalent de plusieurs siècles dans l’histoire de la technologie – permet à Cairns d’élaborer des images singulières. Dans ses œuvres, les bâtiments, façades d’immeubles et complexes immobiliers semblent nimbés d’un halo brumeux qui brouille leur perception. L’esthétique de son œuvre évoque les codes visuels de la science-fiction et ses récits alternatifs. Si la figure humaine semble totalement absente de ces mégalopoles, elle y est pourtant perceptible via le questionnement qu’Antony Cairns mène sur nos interactions avec notre urbanisme et la manière dont la technologie façonne nos perceptions.
