Marta Zgierska
Exhibition viewMarta Zgierska, born in 1987 in Lublin, is a Polish visual artist trained in photography, theater, and journalism. Her work explores trauma, memory, anxiety, and extreme experiences through photography that straddles the line between autobiography and staging. A winner of the HSBC Photography Prize in 2016, she continues to investigate the physical and psychological traces left by lived experiences.
Presented at Intervalle in 2017, Post emerged directly from the car accident Zgierska was involved in in 2013. Seriously injured, she underwent several surgeries and a long recovery period, grappling with pain, the fragility of the body, and a newfound anxiety. The accident became the starting point for a photographic exploration of what remains after trauma. Zgierska does not seek to recount the circumstances of the accident, but rather to convey its consequences: a vulnerable body, objects charged with tension, gestures frozen in time, and silent, enigmatic images. Post thus becomes an attempt to give form to the experience of the aftermath—when the event is over but continues to inhabit the body and memory.
