Athos, The Colours of Faith

Born in Kavala in 1966, Stratos Kalafatis lives and works in Thessaloniki. Since the 1990s, he has been developing a long-term photographic project that blends documentary, narrative, and personal experience. His work has been exhibited internationally and published in several monographs, including Athos – The Colours of Faith.

Presented at Galerie Intervalle in 2018, Athos, The Colours of Faith is the result of five years and 25 trips to Mount Athos. Far from merely documenting monastic life, Kalafatis seeks to convey the intimate experience of a place whose rhythms, silences, and codes he gradually comes to understand. Landscapes, portraits of monks, scenes of daily life, rituals, and nocturnal visions come together to form a deeply subjective representation of the region.

The saturated colors, square format, and at times theatrical compositions deliberately distance these images from classical documentary photography. Kalafatis constructs an almost mythological vision of Athos: a real world, yet rendered strangely present, where the materiality of the images becomes the means of approaching that which remains invisible.
