“Click Clack, thanks Kodak!” In 1967, this slogan summed up a revolution: making photography accessible to everyone. With Bleached Moment, Lucas Leffler explores how Kodak has shaped the way we see, the way we take photographs, and our relationship to memory. In the digital age, he reintroduces time, materiality, and chemistry into the image.
With permission from the Nicéphore Niépce Museum, the artist gained access to previously unseen Kodak archives: production photographs, advertisements, and scenes from everyday life. Drawing on large-format negatives used for professional purposes, he selects images designed by the brand to appeal to the public of the time. He crops them and reproduces them as chromogenic prints. Then, in the darkroom, he intervenes in the development process to introduce an unpredictable chemical reaction—an accident that transforms the image. Once the alteration is achieved, he fixes it onto the print. The image, originally designed to faithfully convey a message, thus becomes an unstable surface, much like our memories, which change over time.
The project was developed during residencies at Picto Lab and the Nicéphore Niépce Museum. It will be published by RVB Books in 2027.
