The REVO series is part of Lucas Leffler’s exploration of photography’s industrial heritage and its profound technological transformations. Through the history of Kodak, the artist connects three eras of the medium: the early days of photography with wet collodion, the industrial era of film photography embodied by Kodak, and the advent of digital technology.
At the turn of the 2000s, Kodak spearheaded the transition to digital with the slogan “What a great day for a revolution.” A few years later, one of its historic factories was demolished. The images of this demolition—filmed by the workers themselves and now available on YouTube—became, for Leffler, an archive of a turning point: that of an industry witnessing the disappearance of the technological world it had helped to build.
The artist juxtaposes these digital images with a photographic technique that emerged at the very origins of the medium: wet collodion. The traces and artifacts inherent to the digital image thus encounter the materiality, instability, and artisanal dimension of a 19th-century photographic process.
By creating a dialogue between these technologies separated by time, Lucas Leffler does not simply juxtapose past and present: he builds a bridge between different stages of photographic history. The demolition of Kodak thus becomes the meeting point of several technical revolutions, from the earliest photographic processes to the contemporary digital image.
