Afterbeauty ‘s spatial forms are made up of used plastic surgery face masks. To obtain the necessary materials, marta Zgierska follows a ritual: placing the mask on her face and repeating the process until it becomes harmful to her skin. Her aim is to transform her image into a pure form, stripped of all mimetic and gendered representation. Although the material used is visually detached from its initial context - the female face - it retains an essence of self-portraiture. Paradoxically, even while rejecting sex through abstraction, the material highlights the sexual context of the work.

The artist criticises the current canons of beauty and the social pressure they exert, as well as the expectations placed on the female image. Her work questions the fascination with new methods of beauty, which is often reflected in works of art.

Using the ephemeral forms of used masks, she questions the nature of beauty. The resulting abstract sculptures invite an aesthetic perception that defies certainty.
